Ohio ACTE May 2020 Member Update

May 12, 2020 2:23 PM | Anonymous

The 2019-2020 school year is drawing to a close, and not in the way anyone anticipated. With no notice, all educators were asked to deliver education and engage students in new and different ways for the safety of all Ohio citizens.    Career-technical educators stepped up to the challenge and there are many ways schools have adapted, click here for a few examples.

Many members have been asking about the Ohio ACTE Annual Connections to Education Conference, and after much thought and deliberation, the Ohio ACTE Executive Board made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s conference.  It’s a disappointment to all, as the conference is a time to get up to date on career-tech programs, hear ODE updates, and most popular of all, connect with colleagues and share solutions.  For details, click here.

While you continue to focus on your students, the Ohio Association for Career and Technical Education leadership, in conjunction with our partners, Ohio Association for Career-Technical Superintendents (OACTS) and Ohio Association of Comprehensive and Compact Career-Technical Schools (CCS), continues to work on behalf of the career-technical and adult education community.

We remain in contact with the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and the DeWine-Husted administration to make sure career-technical and adult education concerns are addressed as plans move forward regarding the reopening of school and the 2020-2021 school year.

Here are the latest updates:

Ohio ACTE Actions

  • Update the Ohio ACTE website and continually post news items on the news blog and use social media to share information and updates from ODE.
  • Provide feedback and work with our colleagues in the ODE, Office of CTE, on issues and concerns specific to career-technical education.  Association leaders have weekly calls with State Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria and ODE staff.  Calls have also included members of the Governor’s staff.

State Actions

  • The Ohio Department of Education is working on guidance for the upcoming school year and how schools will be affected.
  • The ODE Office of CTE has issued guidance and answered questions specific to CTE, click here.
  • ODE has issued general and specific guidance for schools and teachers and provides updates as available.  ODE created a special webpage for disseminating important information, including video messages from State Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria.
