Credential Update: Dental Professions

October 30, 2020 8:19 AM | Anonymous

To promote flexibility and allow students to tailor their own career pathway after graduation, the Ohio Department of Education is phasing out the bundled industry-recognized credentials American Medical Technologists (AMT) - Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) AND Ohio State Dental Board - Dental Assistant Radiographer's Certificate (CA75) and Commission on Ohio Dental Assistants Certification (CODA) - Ohio Certified Dental Assistant AND Ohio State Dental Board - Dental Assistant Radiographer's Certificate (CB60). Beginning school year 2020-2021, the Commission on Ohio Dental Assistants Certification (CODA) - Ohio Certified Dental Assistant (CB38), Ohio State Dental Board - Dental Assistant Radiographer's Certificate (CJ35) and American Medical Technologists (AMT) - Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) (CA37) should be reported in the Education Management Information System (EMIS) separately. They are worth 6 points each. The bundled credentials were assigned 12 points each.

Please note that the industry credential list posted on the Department’s website is the current list of credentials valid to be earned for graduation and accountability purposes. The EMIS manual contains credentials that are no longer valid to be earned, and depending on the time of year, may not yet reflect changes to the credential list.

Update for Ohio Dental Assistant Certification (CODA) - Ohio Certified Dental Assistant

The Commission on Ohio Dental Assistant Certification (CODA) has suspended testing until further notice. Students have been unable to earn the Ohio Certified Dental Assistant approved industry-recognized credential from the graduation list and it is unclear when CODA’s testing will resume. Per Ohio Revised Code 4715.66, Ohio recognizes a dental assistant certified by CODA or the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). In order to allow students to receive graduation points, the Department is temporarily allowing the DANB – National Entry Level Dental Assistant (NELDA) exam to be reported in leu of the Commission on Ohio Dental Assistants Certification (CODA) - Ohio Certified Dental Assistant (CB38) for the 2020-2021 school year. EMIS assessment code CB38 should be used when reporting the DANB – National Entry Level Dental Assistant (NELDA) certification. The Department will provide updates regarding the Ohio Dental Assistant Certification (CODA) - Ohio Certified Dental Assistant industry credential as they become available.
